Changing the slums of Kabiria
We have decided to change this slum area that the larger organizations have”forgotten.” Jesus doesn’t forget anyone! In Kenya, we are working with a local church to provide follow-up care, and to ensure a strong presence in the community. In phase one of this project, we have concentrated on winning the hearts of the people by handing out food, organizing a children’s “birthday” party, household visitation, and simply taking the time to talk to people. This has enabled us to see how the people live and function in their everyday lives.

Through this work, the congregation experienced rapid growth as people gained a new understanding and appreciation for the church. It wasn’t just church members that received help. We concentrated on helping the weakest and the poorest people in the community. By doing so, we were able to gain great influence in the Kabiria area. We visited several homes where we found widows struggling just to have enough money to survive. One of the widows we met had fallen and broken her foot after a local landowner had chased her out of “his” forest. She had been gathering dry branches and twigs to sell in order to buy food for her three children. Her foot had been broken a year ago and it had not healed properly due to lack of medical attention. We made sure that she and her children received food and prayed for her health and healing. We also met children that could not be sent to school because they had not eaten for many days. We were covered with dirt, clay, and urine from babies not wearing diapers. Nevertheless, we rejoiced over every person that accepted the gospel of Jesus Christ. Many were saved and God’s Word began to spread throughout Kabiria!
